In its simplest term, a bi-fold is a door that slides open while its panels fold up and stack neatly against one or both ends – like a concertina. Bi-fold doors are also known as bi-folding doors, folding sliding doors, glass sliding doors, folding room dividers.
The History of Bi-Fold Doors
Bi-fold doors became popular during the 19th century although excavations in Pompeii have shown that the romans had already used them. Bi-folds were mainly used for closets, cupboards & laundry rooms where space was tight and a standard swing door would take up too much space when opened. They generally consisted of only two panels. Nowadays they are used both internally and externally offering flexibility and style over much wider spans consisting of anything from 3 to 7 panels.
Throughout the last century bi-fold doors have fluctuated in popularity although over the past 5 -10 years they have become increasingly desirable with many people rediscovering there appeal. The majority of people find bi-folds so appealing because they take up far less space than standard doors. They also create a new look to a home and allow light to flow from outside in or room to room.
Bi-fold Door Styles
Both internal and external bi-fold doors are remarkably easy to operate, with simple tracking systems that run along there length. Panels are usually connected together in a train and can be joined together in a number of configurations. Originally designed to work in pairs, odd numbers of doors are now more common as this offers the flexibility of having a swing/traffic door. Bi-fold doors offer the flexibility to be fully opened, partially opened or totally closed and are ideal for connecting living rooms, entertainment areas, gardens & patios.
Bi-fold doors usually come complete with track and fittings, can be opened inwards or outwards and are suitable for left or right hand opening. The style of doors can be chosen to match an individual’s home whether it is modern, retro or classical and will create more space than ever thought possible.
