Interior Design Ideas for Dark Living Rooms

If your living room is small and does not see a lot of sunlight then you may find that it feels dull and depressing – especially at this time of year. There’s no need to have to come in from a beautiful sunny day to sit down in a dark and boring living room. Try these simple interior design tips to brighten up your home.

1. Choose bright colours, or appealing pastels

White decor may be a cliche, but there’s a reason that it is used so often. Choosing white wall and a light coloured floor makes a room look bigger and brighter. You will need to pick a stylish accent to avoid a plain looking room, however.

2. Use Less Furniture

The more “stuff” there is in your room, the darker and more cramped it will feel. The fewer items of furniture you have in the room, the more space there will be, and the bigger the room will look. Make sure that there is a clear walkway through the room, and that there is an obvious focal point – such as the TV, fireplace, or coffee table. Design the room around that focal point.

3. Use Sheer Curtains

Maximise the amount of light that gets into the room by using sheer curtains instead of heavy curtains or blinds. Take advantage of natural light during the daytime, and enjoy the view out of the window too whilst maintaining privacy.

4. Hang Large Mirrors on The Wall

Using mirrors to make a small space look brighter and larger is one of the oldest optical illusions in the world of interior design. Many shops and restaurants fill an entire wall with mirrors to make their establishments look bigger. You probably don’t want to do that in your living room, but hanging a large mirror above the fireplace will still help to make your living room feel more spacious. Try to keep the area opposite the mirror clutter-free otherwise the room will simply look even busier and more cluttered.

5. Concealed Storage

If you have a lot of clutter to contend with, try taking advantage of concealed storage. Closed cupboards, drawers under your sofa and other simple storage solutions will help to keep your living room looking clean and clear, keeping your room looking bright and airy. The more minimalistic your living space, the more appealing it will look if you’re struggling for light.

6. Add More Light

This may seem like an obvious solution, but it is one that a lot of people overlook. If your room looks too dull and dark, add more lights. A single pendulum light is not enough for most rooms. Add some free-standing lamps, spot lighting and functional lighting so that the room is comfortably lit for all purposes. You don’t have to use all of those lights all of the time, but having the option is always a good thing. During the day, try to use natural light as much as possible. Opt for LED or halogen lighting in the evenings.
