How to Measure for a New Door

Most modern homes have standard sized doors that are called 2-6 doors. These doors are 30 inches wide by 80 inches tall. If you are lucky enough to live in a property with a standard sized door then replacing your door will be an easy job since you can buy any stock slab or pre-hung door and have a good chance of it being a perfect fit. However, if you have a non-standard door opening then you will need to measure your door first and either buy a more unusually sized door or cut an existing door down to size.

Measuring an Existing Door

The easiest way to find out what size of door you need is to measure an existing door:

  • First, measure the height of the door – take two measurements, one on the left and one on the right hand side of the door.
  • Next, measure the width of the door – again, take too measurements, one near the top and one near the bottom.
  • Open the door and measure the thickness.
  • Take the largest measurements for the height and width, and purchase the closest door you can find to that size; err on the side of buying a door that is slightly too big, if you cannot find one that is a perfect match.

Measuring an Open Door Frame

If you are installing a door into an open frame, then you will not have the luxury of being able to measure a perfectly fit door. Measuring an open frame requires a little more care than measuring a door. The basic process, however, is similar to the one listed above:

  • Measure the height of the door, from the top of the frame down to the floor. Take two measurements, one on each side of the door. Take into account the thickness of the carpet when you measure this.
  • Measure the width of the door – take three measurements for this – one at the top, one in the middle of the door, and one at the bottom. Take the narrowest of the three measurements as being the correct one for the door.
  • Measure the thickness of the door. If you are fitting an interior door, take the measurement from sheetrock to sheetrock. If you are fitting an external door, take the measurement from the exterior sheeting to the sheetrock.

Some Final Tips

Before you order a new door, make sure that you choose a door that will open comfortably once it is installed. Stand so that the door will open towards you, and make a note of which side of the door the hinges are on. One thing that many people forget is that you can buy left-hinged or right-hinged doors. Double check your measurements, and double check where the hinges sit, before you place an order. This will save you from having to try to cut down an ill-fitting door (or send it back and get it replaced).
