Reckless Builders and The Real Cost of Choosing the Wrong Contractor

Posted in: Blog

Hiring a builder can be a bewildering process. If you aren’t involved with the trade yourself it can be difficult to judge how complicated a job is and whether the quote that you have been offered is reasonable. More than 3/4 of people are concerned about the possibility of being ripped off when it comes to hiring builders, and two thirds of people feel anxious when dealing with workmen. These concerns are so strong that one in ten homeowners try to take on major jobs themselves, rather than work with a builder, and then go on to botch those jobs.

It doesn’t have to be that way! This handy infographic explains how to choose a reliable and reputable contractor, and ensure that you get the best possible work done. Some simple precautions, such as comparing quotes from multiple builders, asking for references and confirming that your chosen builder is a member of the relevant trade body can make all the difference between good work and getting ripped off.  Remember, the cheapest contractor is not always the best, and if their quote seems too good to be true, then it probably is!

This is an excellent infographic and I agree with the points mentioned. Tradesmen have an active career and are often large men. In my experience they are mostly great guys to work with but if you get a bad one then it can be intimidating.

Sites like Checkatrade have made the search process much easier.

Definitely get quotes and ask for a breakdown of the work!
